Shamshiri in Glendale, CA

Shamshiri is a Persian/Iranian restaurant in Glendale!  A small group of us went here for lunch after church one Sunday.  I wanted to try something new, so I got one of the house stews.

Gheymeh Bademjan for $11.99- eggplant stew with sauteed diced beef, onions, and yellow split peas in a saffron tomato sauce, and served with Basmati rice.  This stew is hearty but slightly sour.  The sourness comes from the large ball in the stew.  I thought it was a tomato, but it was really sour and had a different texture from a stewed tomato.  After asking the waiters, we found out that it was a preserved lemon and that only some of the locals eat it!
